Playing

I have never played backgammon. Where do I start?

Tap How to play on the start screen. It covers the whole game: how the board is numbered, how the dice work, hitting and entering from the bar, bearing off, and how the doubling cube changes the score. You do not need to read it all at once.

How do I move a checker?

Two ways, whichever you prefer. Tap a checker to pick it up and the legal destinations light up, then tap the one you want. Or drag the checker straight to where it is going. If a move is not offered, it is not legal with the dice you rolled.

I made a mistake. Can I take a move back?

Yes, as long as you have not ended your turn. Tap Undo in the bar at the bottom to step back through the moves you have made this turn. Once the turn passes to your opponent it is final.

What is the doubling cube for?

It doubles what the game is worth. Before you roll, you can offer the cube. Your opponent either accepts, and the stake doubles, or declines and loses immediately at the current value. Whoever accepts owns the cube and is the only one who can offer it next.

A plain win scores the cube value. A gammon, where the loser bore off nothing, scores double that. A backgammon, where the loser also still has a checker on the bar or in your home board, scores triple.

Can I play against another person?

Yes, on one device. Choose 2 Players on the start screen and hand the phone back and forth. There is no online play, and there are no accounts.

Settings

Does it save my game if I close the app?

Yes, automatically. Your game in progress and your match score are saved as you play, so you can leave mid-turn and come back to exactly the same board. Nothing is uploaded; the save lives only on your phone.

Can I play as black, or flip the board around?

Both. On the start screen, pick your checker color, then use Board Direction to put your home board on the left or the right, and your side at the top or the bottom. Set it up the way you are used to playing in person.

How do I turn off the sound or the vibration?

On the start screen, under Feedback, tap Sound or Vibration to switch either one off. Sound also respects your phone's ring or silent switch, so flipping the phone to silent mutes the game too.

The computer is too easy, or too hard.

Change the difficulty on the start screen before you begin. Easy ignores your blots entirely and just races. Medium watches for them and fights for points. Hard plays out whole turns in its head before it commits to one.

Problems

The app opened to a black screen.

Force quit it and open it again: swipe up from the bottom of the screen, hold, then swipe the app card away. If it happens twice, email me and say which iPhone and which iOS version you are on, so I can reproduce it.

I think a move was scored wrong.

Please tell me. A screenshot of the board plus the dice you rolled is enough for me to work out what happened. Rules bugs get fixed first.

Is the game free? Are there ads or purchases?

It is free, and there are none of either. No ads, nothing to buy, no subscription, no unlockable themes. Every theme and every mode is there from the first launch.

What data does the app collect?

None at all. The app never connects to the internet. See the privacy policy for the full detail.
